Medical Cannabis Evaluation in Alabama: Eligibility, Process, and What to Expect

February 4, 2026

Alabama’s medical cannabis program is designed to give certain patients a regulated option for symptom relief under state law, and it also creates a lot of questions about eligibility, process, and what “medical cannabis evaluation” really means. The Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission (AMCC) sets patient registration requirements, and patients must be recommended by an Alabama physician certified through the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners (ALBME) before they can complete registration for a medical cannabis card.

Our clinic offers in-person medical cannabis evaluations focused on safety, documentation, and compliance. Alabama rules require a face-to-face visit that includes a physical examination and a full review of medical history, and the state does not allow telemedicine for certifying/recommending medical cannabis.

During your visit, the goal is to confirm whether you have a qualifying condition, review prior treatments, discuss potential benefits and risks, and determine whether a recommendation is appropriate for you under Alabama’s rules.

If a recommendation is made, the physician submits the required information into the AMCC patient registry system so the patient can complete their registration and apply for a medical cannabis card (and caregivers apply separately when applicable).  Alabama also limits product forms—AMCC materials list items like tablets/capsules, tinctures, topical preparations, suppositories, transdermal patches, nebulizers, and inhaler oils/liquids, while prohibiting raw plant material, smokable/vapeable products, and infused foods such as cookies or candies.
